While on a recent trip to London, we were walking along the Thames and spotted a memorial bust of Sir Joseph Bazalgettte!! He practically invented sewer systems and is responsible for the cleaning up the “Big Stink” of 1858 in London. His underground network of brick constructed sewers are still in use today and saved the city from a more serious cholera epidemic all those years ago. His mastery and foresight in underground sewage systems is what the Philadelphia system is based off of. So, hats off to Sir Bazalgette and thanks for the clean water!
